Week 6 - Oct 10 - 13

Well hi! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving long weekend. We're back at it this week: lots to do and just four days to work with. Here is the plan:

Writing: Here on the blog you'll notice a new tab at the top of the page. The Spooky Story task goes full steam ahead this week. We will explore the criteria and thoroughly plan our tale before we begin writing. Which of the five story starters did you choose? Note that if you have a hard time generating an idea, don't delay. Please get help early and regularly. I'm here to help! This is not a task to be left to the last minute.

Reading: The Boundless continues this week. Be sure to work on the reading response tasks as you listen. We may get time to move on to reading response number 3 before the week is over.

Science: Students who have not yet completed the stations lab from last week should do so soon. We will do a little demonstration to emphasize the importance of hydration to the excretory system.

PHE: The PHE curriculum has a lot of stuff that doesn't take place in the gym. We'll launch into the health and mental well-being aspects of the curriculum this week. Also, be on the lookout for a Skating permission form heading home on Tuesday in advance of next week's field trip to OBRec.

Math: With a little reminder or two, many of you have shown solid familiarity with the array model strategy for multiplying. Let's continue revisiting strategies for multiplication this week. We will also spend some time revisiting basic facts (see note to parents below).

Parents: To this point many children have not yet mastered the basic multiplication facts to 10 x 10. And several do not yet have reliable and efficient strategies for mentally calculating those basic facts that they do not know. Unfamiliarity with the basics has become a barrier to success with multi-step computations. Over the next few weeks I will be sending home targeted practice pages for those who will benefit from a little extra work on this. Please help by reinforcing the importance of practice. I have posted copies of the practice pages on Classroom as well so you can print extras at home.

Have a great week, everyone!
