Week 29 - Apr 14 - 17

Well hi there! Thanks for staying up to date with what's going on in our class.

This is an exciting week. Ms. Scherr has joined us, and she will be around for the next six weeks. Ms. Scherr is a 3rd year education student, and she is also a Monterey alumnus. Cool! To begin, she will take over Language Arts. As her time with us progresses, Ms. Scherr will take on more and more responsibilities for our class. A practicum is a pretty important moment in a teacher's development, and a good experience can really help launch a successful career. Thanks in advance for supporting her learning by participating to the best of your ability, making good choices, listening well, and by being here.

Language Arts: Our first novel study of the year will get underway this week. We have a brand new set of novels - each of you will get a copy of The Skeleton Tree by Iain Lawrence to borrow. Look after this book, please. It is an awesome story, and is one of my favourites for kids your age. Make sure you keep up with the required reading. And make sure you don't read ahead of the class (I know many of you will be tempted!). Keep up with the assignments, being sure to keep these safe in your binders as we go. You'll be covering 3 - 4 chapters per week; some reading may need to happen at home.

Writing: We will pick up where we left off last week. You'll remember that we brainstormed about friends and friendship. Now we'll turn our ideas into a paragraph. When revising your piece, I'll ask you to focus on sentence fluency.

Math: We'll continue our look at dividing decimals this week. Expect a little check-in task before the end of the week - I'd like to know if you are ready to move on.

Social Studies: In case you hadn't noticed, there's a federal election on. This week, we'll learn about one of the federal candidates and our new PM, Mark Carney.

Science: This week will be all about Newton's 2nd Law of motion. This one is the "mathy" one: scientists have worked out ways of measuring and recording force, mass and acceleration. We'll get into a couple of demontrations, and a lab, to help us understand this dynamic.

That's all for this week, folks!
