Week 3 - Sept 18 - 21

Hi All,

Thanks for checking in. It is a short week this week this time around. I hope you are able to make some fun plans for Friday's Pro-D day.

Before we get to this week's plans, here's something to keep in mind. The blog is a place where you'll find info about what we're working on here in Div 13. Sometimes I'll have school-wide information, but you're on your own for things like basketball tryouts, band concerts and other student-specific events or information. You will also have to track your own Social Studies and French info.

The week ahead looks like this:

Math: We have begun exploring patterns as a way to ease our brains back into a logically-oriented mindset. We'll also begin reviewing some of the computation strategies you might have become familiar with over the past few years.

(A note on basic facts: Grade six students should be approaching comfort and fluency with multiplication facts to 10 x 10 and their related division facts, as well as addition facts to 10 + 10 and related subtraction facts. If you're feeling out of practice, or you're feeling the need for some support with these, please know you are not alone. I'm here to help. It'll take some practice. Bring a growth mindset to learning these facts and we'll have you zipping through them before long.)

Language Arts: We got a chance to visit the school library for book exchanges on Monday. Please take a moment to share with your folks about your choice(s). Why did you select the books that you did? We will begin a read-aloud tale this week (The Boundless by Kenneth Oppel), and we'll begin to build profiles for the book's main characters. For writing, we'll begin to explore Ideas - the first of six writing traits that we will look at this year.

Science: To begin our year, we will extend the learning about human body systems that you began in either your grade 4 or 5 year. We'll review what we know, and then jump on in to the excretory system.

The Terry Fox Foundation fundraising drive is ON here at MMS. One of our grade 8 teachers, Mr. Heim, has committed to having his head shaved should we reach our school goal of $5000. Keep seeking pledges and collect the cash in a safe place before bringing it all to school next week. There is a jar for ongoing small donations, too.

Enjoy your week, everyone!
