The Weather Poster
Comprehensive Evaluation Assignment
Name:
The Weather Poster Mini-Project is your opportunity to “show what you know” using elements of Science, Writing, and Math; you’ll blend them all together into an artistic composition. There is a short time-frame for this assignment. A significant amount of class time over the next 3 weeks will be devoted to this poster. Diligent students will be able to meet the expectations for this task in class. Students wishing to exceed expectations, or those who do not use their work time wisely, will need to set some time aside to complete this task at home.
Your poster will show a weather phenomenon of your choice. You are encouraged to choose a weather phenomenon that we are likely to experience here in Victoria, but that is not required. Research might not be necessary if you choose a topic that we have discussed in class. For example, we will learn about fog in class: you will, from those lessons, know enough to produce a poster that meets expectations! That being said, please feel free to do some research for those weather phenomena that we haven't talked about. Please be sure to do all of your poster tasks in your own words.
Your poster will:
1. Tell in detail how your weather phenomenon happens in nature. Your description must use scientific vocabulary (like “condensation”, “precipitation”, etc…). Your description should talk about the role that the 3 elements of weather (heat, water, air pressure), play in making your weather happen.
2. Include a colourful “technical” diagram similar to the ones we will have done in class.
3. Include a graph showing data that is somehow related to your weather topic. Mr. Pite will help you come up with a data set to graph if you need.
4. Include a one-paragraph “write” that includes your weather phenomenon as a central theme. Minimum ten sentences, including your introduction and conclusion. We will talk about creating mood with weather to help you really knock this one out of the park!
5. Include a colourful illustration that depicts your weather phenomenon as an observer would see it. Use a medium of your choice. This illustration does not need to be separate from the other poster elements. Rather, it can be used as the "string" that ties all the others together. In other words, use your illustration to link the other parts of your poster into one piece. Use your imagination, here!
6. A title, your name, and a representation of your very best work in all pieces.
In addition, you may wish to include (but do not have to…)
· A poem about your weather
· A historical record fact list
· A map
· A weather “survival guide” that tells how to survive your weather phenomenon
· Any other extras that you feel enhance your poster
Your Weather Story should:
- Be at least 10 sentences. Please limit your story to less than 25 sentences… it has to fit on your poster!
- Have a clear beginning, middle, and end.
- Feature the weather phenomenon of your poster in some way.
- Use “really good” vocabulary (great nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs).
- Have good mechanics (grammar, spelling and punctuation, indented, etc.).
- Have a Title, Name and Date on your draft.
- Be neatly and clearly written onto your poster.
